5 Tips to Help You Maintain an Organized Living Room in a Small Space

If you have a small living room, it can be challenging to keep it organized. Our living room is also used as our playroom, home office and dining area, so we really had to be creative when planning it out. The following are some tips that will help you maintain an organized living room, especially in a small space.

1. The Coffee Table

We currently don’t have a coffee table in our living room because we have young children and it was proving to be more of a hazard than a useful piece of furniture. Instead, we have an open floor space with an extra-large yoga mat which is perfect for the kids to play on. The coffee table we had has been moved to our storage locker and we will bring it back once the kids are older. I love our coffee table because it’s dual purpose. It can open up and be used to store items. Also, the tabletop can be used as a coffee table or it can be brought up and works great as a desk or place to eat dinner while sitting on the couch. So when choosing a coffee table, try to find one that's dual purpose.

2.  The Sofa

Similar to the coffee table, I’d recommend getting a sofa with multiple purposes or storage. It’s always nice to have a sofa bed for guests. We don’t have a sofa bed, however, our sofa has space underneath, so we can store several slim organizers beneath it. Ikea has a sofa that acts as both storage and a sofa bed.

3.  Storage Unit

Consider getting tall and narrow shelving units or storage units. You want to take advantage of your wall space when you have a small living room. Avoid short and bulky pieces of furniture. We love these leaning shelves and have used them in three different units to date. They’re great because they can be configured differently to suit the room. In one of our homes, the desk was in the bedroom and now it’s in the living room. They also don’t take up a lot of floor space, yet they provide a lot of storage.

4.  Artwork and Decor

Keep the artwork and decor to a minimum. This will help make the space look less cluttered. Try to keep tabletops and shelves as clear as possible. This will give you less to clean and make the space appear larger.

5.  Baskets and Bins

Place baskets and bins beside the sofa or on the shelves to store things like blankets and toys. Stick to neutral coloured bins to make the space look less cluttered.
