If you have a small living room, it can be challenging to keep it organized. Our living room is also used as our playroom, home office and dining area, so we really had to be creative when planning it out. The following are some tips that will help you maintain an organized living room, especially in a small space.
We currently don’t have a coffee table in our living room because we have young children and it was proving to be more of a hazard than a useful piece of furniture. Instead, we have an open floor space with an extra-large yoga mat which is perfect for the kids to play on. The coffee table we had has been moved to our storage locker and we will bring it back once the kids are older. I love our coffee table because it’s dual purpose. It can open up and be used to store items. Also, the tabletop can be used as a coffee table or it can be brought up and works great as a desk or place to eat dinner while sitting on the couch. So when choosing a coffee table,...
Whenever you organize a space, it’s essential to follow certain steps in order for it to be effective. If you don’t follow these steps, it’ll be harder to maintain and it’s doubtful that the space will remain organized. I will use a junk drawer as an example when explaining the steps.
Take everything out of the drawer and place it somewhere where you can sort through it. You can use a tabletop, counter, the floor or your bed. You will need some space to spread it all out. You must take everything out of the drawer, there’s no point trying to organize with things still in the drawer.
Wipe down the drawer so that you have a clean space to store the items.
You must now hold every item that you removed from your drawer and decide if it’s worth keeping. Only keep what you value. If you don’t love it or don’t use it often, it needs to go. You don’t want to keep everything or you’ll just be trying to organize clutter. You ca...
Mudrooms are one of my favourite spaces in the home. I love that they can be set up to keep everyone in the family organized.
Since we live in a fairly small condo, I never considered creating a mudroom for us when we first moved in four years ago. I didn't think of it because there wasn't any space for a traditional mudroom. But now that we have three kids, I’m finding a greater need for a space to keep all of our coats, bags and shoes organized. Especially in the winter, we have so many jackets, snow pants and accessories. Definitely one of the negatives of living in a small space is not being able to have a traditional mudroom. Nevertheless, I did figure out how to create a mini “mudroom” in our main hallway and I’ve shared how I did it in this video:
Whether you live in a large or small space, I think it’s important to have a designated spot for each family member's coat, accessories, bag and shoes. It really helps keep everyone organized and will speed up the morning routine....
I didn’t always make it a priority to make my bed. If I managed to fit it into my busy schedule, great! If not, it didn’t really bother me. For the past few months, I’ve made a conscious effort to make all of the beds in our home as soon as my daughter Isha and my son Kian are off to school. Obviously, since I’m on maternity leave I’m not in a rush in the morning and can manage to do this. Hopefully, when I return to work I can continue to include making all of the beds in my morning routine because I’ve noticed a lot of benefits.
On most days I quickly make my bed and don't lay out all of the decorative pillows. But when I have more time, I do like to make it so it looks like a luxury hotel bed. Learn how I do this and how I keep all of my linens white in this video.
The beds take up so much space in our small condo, making them instantly makes our condo look much tidier. Since we don’t have a second floor we’re constantly looking at our bedroom...
If you’ve been following me for a while you know that I’m working towards becoming a minimalist. Therefore, I’m constantly getting rid of things we don’t love or use regularly. The playroom is one of the areas that is likely to get cluttered very quickly. You really have to stay on top of it and continuously purge items that aren’t being used if you don’t want it to get out of control. I’ve done numerous playroom purges and thought I’d share the top 5 items we love having in our playroom.
Technically we don’t have a designated playroom since we live in a small condo. Our living room is our playroom and so is part of my kids' bedroom. If you want to know more about how I organized our playroom/living room/kids bedroom, check out this video.
Now here are the top 5 must-haves for our playroom:
We love this table so much that we now have two of them in our condo. We don’t have a coffee table or a dining table. Instead, we use these two tabl...
I’ve always had a small kitchen and over the years, I’ve tried out quite a few small appliances. Since my space is so limited, I couldn't keep all of them. Today I thought I’d share which ones have been worth keeping. I should also mention that this blog post is not sponsored, I genuinely use all of these appliances regularly and think they’re worth having, even in a tiny kitchen.
My husband and I use this machine every single day. I have a latte and he has an Americano. We have the original version - Lattissima. We love it because the coffee tastes amazing. Sipping on a cappuccino from this machine reminds us of a trip we took to Italy when we first got married. We had some of the best cappuccinos there and now we can have them at home every single day.
This is a fairly new discovery for me, but I know it’s here to stay. I got rid of my toaster oven and replaced it with an air fryer. Not only does this machine make toast, but I can make all sorts of qui...
When I was pregnant with my first child, friends, family and coworkers often told me that we’d have to move to the suburbs and buy a house. I was warned that babies have a lot of stuff and I’d need space for all of this stuff. My husband and I didn’t want to move to the suburbs, so we decided to see if we could make it work in a small space.Â
These people were right, it is nice to have things like an exersaucer or swing for the baby and these things do take up quite a bit of space. But we realized that this is only temporary. They only use those bulky items for a few months, then you can put them in storage, sell or donate them.Â
We’re often asked how we manage to live in a condo with three kids and to be honest, it’s not that difficult and there are a lot of advantages to it. I believe that the number one reason why we’re capable of doing it, is because we were willing to declutter. We try very hard to only keep things that we value in our condo. If it’s not ad
...Small bathrooms don’t typically come with a lot of storage space, so it’s important to make the most of the storage space under the sink. The only thing is, that space can be a bit challenging to organize because of the pipes that are in the way. Nevertheless, it needs to be done properly for the following reasons:
By making the most of the space underneath the sink, you’ll be able to keep your countertops clear. This will make your bathroom look cleaner, larger and less cluttered.
By having a storage system that makes it easy for you to quickly grab what you need, you’ll save a lot of time when getting ready. Especially if you need to access this area daily, you want it to be quick and easy.
In this video, I’ll show you the storage solutions that I tried that didn’t work and I’ll also show you the one that finally ended up working perfectly for us. This solution is organized, it looks great and it really helps us save time in the morning when we're all ...
